Kookaburra Hollow # 1

Welcome to Kookaburra Hollow!

For my very first post I decided to share something that is very special to me.

I live on a rural property on the outskirts of Darwin City, Northern Territory, Australia.

On my property there are many trees which attract all manor of local wildlife.

One such tree is an ordinary old Darwin Woollybutt (Eucalyptus miniata) however....it is anything but ordinary.

This particular tree is the nesting place of a family (aka-riot) of Blue-Winged Kookaburras (Dacelo leachii) and they have been nesting there for over 10 years.

Blue-Winged kookaburras are not to be confused with Australia's Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) which is the worlds largest kingfisher and is slightly larger than the Blue-Winged kookaburra.

The Blue-Winged Kookaburras have larger family groups with reports of up to 12 members.

As of November 2023 Kookaburra Hollow (which is what I have named my clan) has 8 members consisting of the -

- Breeding pair - Dominant male - Big Daddy and Dominant female - Big Momma
- Twin adult brothers Levi and Bluegrass
- 2022's juvenile female - Lilibet
- and 2023's triplet girls who have yet to be named.

This first post is a photomontage of the Big Daddy. I will introduce all the others in due course along with their day to day activities past and present.

I have been photographing these guys for many years so have a lot of posting to catch you up to date...so if you think this is something you may be interested in please stay tuned as there will be much more.

There will also be many other images yet to come including (but not limited to) the powerful Saltwater Crocodile, the majestic White-Bellied Sea Eagles, the vibrant Finches of the region, Parrots and Cockatoos a plenty etc etc but I had to start somewhere and the Kookaburra Hollow was as good a place as any.
